View Full Version : Safe, easy/cheap power from 1.6L

I want to say looking at the NA dyno thread I'm impressed with the power/times you guys put down.

I'd like to make my 1.6L in my '00 civic EX a bit more fun, its just so worthless.

It has 134k miles and is bone stock, right now the PS belt has been removed because the system was leaking somewhere and i don't care to fix it in the cold.

Anywho, what can I do that will make some noticeable changes?

Are there any easy motor swaps worth while?

Don't waste your money, save it for the 1G.

boost the D.. make 200whp 180tq and be happy with your budget turbo setup...
find a good tuner
make sure you don't skimp out on ghetto rigging oil lines... instal the turbo kit properly and you should have very little to worry about shit flying off on the freeway. lol

sell it and buy a DSM. Cheap power right there.

Im sure this isnt the first time youve heard this term. but for the most part you have to pick 2 of the 3.

Cheap
Fast
Reliable

Pick two you want, and the one remaining is what your car wont be essentially.

A stock D with bolt ons really isnt going to net you much, lets face it, D series engines arent performance motors at all.

The only way you are really going to feel a noticeable power gain is through forced induction, and FI is relatively expensive depending on the way you go about it.

I think Shane is right, save your money and put it towards your DSM, or live with the minute gains of bolt ons and 120whp.

he already owns own fool :p

I'm tossing my hat into the "It's a DD civic, don't spend the money on it and spend it on the DSM" ring. Use it as the beater DD and leave the money and go fast parts for the DSM! :D

damn it. OK, i must say I do like driving about 280-300 before the gas tank is drained 1/2 way that makes me smile.

you can definitely make a d16 quicker na and for not that much money. Just get all the bolt ons and if your on a budget nothing wrong with ebay intake, header, and exhaust. Then send your camshaft off to delta and you can get there 272 regrind which i think is under $200 and ive heard good things about it. and stronger valvesprings wouldn't be a bad idea, then mill the head a little, tune and enjoy. Im sure that would make a pretty noticeable difference and you would probably be making a bit more than 120whp lol.

so instead of running 16.7 it will run 16.1? hardly the difference I'd be jumping up and down for after just spending all that money. Boost, or swap out the D are your only options if you want a noticeable difference. Yes I know there are a few quick NA d out there but they are in super light chassis.

Put money into a tune up. Get even better gas mileage. WIN!

Were doing a cheap NA build at the shop. Much like the setup in my civic. mill the head, e85 exhaust, tune.

Shane's right though Aaron , build the 1G.

idk i do have to agree about boosting being the better option but i dont think ebay boltons and a less than $200 cam regrind is that expensive. Feel free to prove me wrong and theres a good chance i am but i am thinking the biggest reason why a b16 is more powerful than a d16 is the fact that it has much higher compression and more aggressive camshafts. Maybe ive just been reading too much on d-series.org lately too and am delusional :)

I think the noise of an all-motor D16 with an upgraded exhaust would drive him crazy in a daily driver.

i havent spent too much so far on the d im building but i wouldnt daily drive it either its gonna idle a lil nasty

lol oh man.

I do need a stereo with aux input, I'm using tunein radio and listen to stations from the UK that I grew up with and Loving it. MN radio sucks.

The 1G is getting built, I need to do a tune up on this thing though. I accidently cracked open part of the intake system and this things is noticeably louder.

I'll live with it being piss slow, its saving me a lot of money.

n/a D is worthless, too much money to go slow. Either Boost the D or drive it the way it is and save gas. I/H/E is pointless, I had 59300 stg2 cam in my d16 along with I/H/E and it was still slow, after all that I was only running 15.5 so I gave up and boost it. plus, I get laid more often while boosted than n/a.

im gonna make about 160 with this d although a swap would have been cheaper its going in a rust free 86 4 door civic so this will be diff and still be bad ass

I've got a t25 and 440 injectors that would be perfect for your set up. 150$ pm if interested. Between mnhondas, honda-tech and eBay you can get a nice setup.

brendizzle1324
06-17-2012, 04:58 PM
damn, good price but im broke as hell right now. Ive decided that im not ready to boost yet since my civic is my only car so if the engine blows im sol. Probably gonna have just bolt-ons for a while till i can get another spare car. Im only 19 anyways so there are more important things to worry about like college than dumping all my money into a car. Thanks for the offer though.

If your smart you would go k20 vtech, but you have to be really cool to do so

Turbotalon1g
06-20-2012, 12:06 AM
I"m not that cool, or it could be dumping $3k into a car not even worth close to that much just to get stolen doesn't sound appealing to me.

I have prosport boost, oil psi and water temp, 14B, DSM injectors, 7" tall FMIC, RFL BoV.

RyanJ1986
06-20-2012, 12:47 AM
No the best idea is dumping 3k into a car not worth that much. Thieves only go for obvious ebay lip kits and knock off wheels in MN. Having a clean car is too much of a risk in itself. Besides, cali, texas and a few ambitious ones on the east coast are years ahead of MN to get on the map. Sad but true.

So i found a JRSC kit and a greddy 15g kit.

If i did boost this car it would have to keep PS and AC.

Can anyone give me some feedback, opinions, pro and cons of each?

Noticeable changes is more than just speed! :) start small.... Like a new shift knob, and work your way up to boosting it (if you must) lol
There's more to a fun car than just its quarter mile time :)

Turboimports

I recommend just boosting it also.
You can do it reliably, just take some time and patience.

Otherwise just swap it. Plenty of B-series parts around. When you have a Honda. Anythings possible.

This thread FTL!

What happened to googling how to make a d16 "fast" and 2million results popping up about ebay headers and spectre hot air intakes?
