reusing rod bearings?

if you take a motor apart and send block to get honed, is it ok to reuse if in good condition? The rods and crank will all be the same?

I am sure its better to get new ones...

It really depends on the condition of the old ones.
Make sure they're not scored, heat stressed, or cracking at all. Double check that they fall in recommended specs (not worn too thin, etc.).
A Haynes manual should have all the specs you need to know for the rotating assembly.

The problem with reusing them is you'll never get them back in exactly how there were, even if replaced on the same rods on the same position on the crank. So, a slight twist, repositioned slightly, you'll hit different wear patterns. Not worth the chance of developing a rod knock to me...

Mark all the bearings before you remove them. The have to go back in the exact same place that you removed them from. Its not the best Idea but race teams do it all the time. I would have the crank checked out to be sure its still in spec though.

I've used both and they've all been good to me so I opt for the cheaper one. The only time I use OEM bearings now is if I want to play with clearences.

don't reuse, would u reuse toilt paper? Go with ACL. If not OEM will be fine.

what engine are you rebuilding?

how many miles do the old bearings have on them? rockauto.com has ACL bearings pretty damn cheap. but if you are tight on cash and the bearings that came out of it are in good shape i wouldnt be scared to reuse them. just realize what you are doing and the consequences if you have a failure.


are you going to an oversized piston or reusing the pistons that came out of it and re-ringing them? make sure the piston to wall clearance doesnt get excessive if you go the later route.

Rod and Main bearings are not that expensive. I would just buy new ones, unless your building a junkyard engine then just make sure there thickness are at spec and that there is no burn marks on the bearing.

Yeah most of the time if your re-use the old ones it tends to have a knock in the motor later. Not in like 50k miles like in 5 mins down the road.
